I recently decided to try some thing new: make a redesign of an app. Here’s a few words about my ideas and thoughts during the process.
A tweet from a Danish gamers site, said that a developer was looking for a graphic designer to redesign his app. The approach was to gain this by changing some graphics. I wrote him, and before long, I was doing a makeover on the app, Speed Word Fight
In Speed Word Fight you make as many words as you can in 90 seconds, and optimize your score by placing your words strategically on bonus fields, and get extra bonus if you make long words.
The time / speed part of this game, is what makes it stand out compared to other word games in the app store, so what I foremost looked to do, was to emphasize speed by changing the app store icons background colour from light green to a bright yellow, making associations to Ducati bikes and the yellow bikers suit from the Kill Bill movies.
I added motion to the general game by putting in some narrowing lines / slopes in the background graphic like a free way, high way, speed way rink.
Next thing was the buttons. The original bright lime green stands out in the app store, and is easily identifiable as an activity point in the game. But as Speed Word Fight has a lot of options, statistics and history, the green colour becomes very dominant, and is not very good as back ground colour for texts. So I suggested to change it to a darker blue which is made transparent.
Then I replaced allmost all the icons and made my own minimalistic icons believing that no icon design will ever fit all app designs, and that a game that contains as much information as Speed Word Fight calls for a minimalistic design.
Speed Word Fight was updated with the new graphics in iTunes app Store this weekend.
